I have always thought super capacitors would be a great alternative to lithium batteries for possible solar solutions with some adjustments. May not be long once the drain down is solved. In a home application, drain down would probably not be that big of a problem in the short run. No water to add and  no equalization for lead acid. Much safer too. Lithium heats up considerably and I have seen many explosions on YouTube. Hover boards, e cigarettes, phones, tablets, and laptops are all over the net.
